This issue has been confounding me. Let me appologize in advance as I am really not all that technical. Anyway here is the problem...I have two computers hooked up to a LAN. Both computers run Win2K and are connected through a hub which in turn is connnected to DSL. The problem is I can not connect to certain websites on either of these networked machines, but I can connect to most other websites easily. When I go to another computer, not on the LAN (this particular one is connected to the internet through traditional dialup) I can connect to the problematic websites with no issue.

There is one common characteristic that all of the websites have that I can not reach. They are all hosted by the same ISP. I know this because I am a web designer and have created all of their websites.

So, because of this my initial thinking is that I have somehow blocked my access to these specific servers, but have no idea how I could have done that. Also, I can not FTP to these servers either.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Can you ping/trace to any of these websites from the LAN. You need to confirm basic connectivity before getting specific on web/ftp. You need to determine if the client machines can connect to the web server or if they can resolve those domain names.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply! So, I went to the DOS prompt and typed "ping and it returned request timed out...Which was strange, because then I went to IE and was able to reach ESPN just fine. Does that seem weird??

By the way when I went to ping one of the sites which I can not reach ( I was able to see that it returned the IP address under the ping statistics...just thought I would mention that.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Michael

Well, the first site ( is un-pingable. Most likely behind a firewall.

As for the second, I can ping it and reach the site via http. If you can see the IP address of the web server then you are resolving DNS okay so it looks like the problem is elsewhere.

How is your browser set up? Are you using a proxy server at all?

Chris.

First of all, thanks so much for the responses. I really appreciate it!! I hope you don't mind me using your personal email, but you provided it and I thought since it was getting late in the UK, I would try to spare you having to monitor the Tech-tips area. Anyway, I am uncertain as to whether or not I use a Proxy Server. Honestly, I am not sure what that means. I did try to access the site in Netscape, since IE didn't work and no luck with that either, which is why I thought it wasn't browser related. I might be missing the point.

So to summarize (For my own clarity), two computers both on a LAN both running Win2K, neither can access with either Netscape or IE. You can access them, my dial computer can access them....I can't FTP to either of them, but I can resolve the DNS, because the IP address appears when I ping. This really doesn't make any sense to me. It is as if my HUB or DSL Modem has been botched, since neither of the computers can access the sites. So, it can't be local to a machine, can it?

By the way, thanks for the clarification about the Firewall. I always thought if you can ping a website you could reach them with your browser.

Have you tried checking your security and or privacy setings, if they exist in Win 2K.The may need to be set a bit lower.
