Hello all,

From the subject my question seems to be clear. It was recently recommended to us that we use SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2003 machine. I would like to know what considerations would have to be made prior to installation of SQL server and weather or not the two are totally compatible.

Also would I still be able to purchase this old version from Microsoft and would I still be entitled to support from them?

Thanks

Liam

As I learned from MrDenny, you would purchase SQL 2005 and then get the down grade to SQL 2000. Yes SQL 2000 will run on Win 2K3 but you must install SP4 for SQL 2000.

- Database performance looks fine, it must be the Network!

I should also mention that selecting the correct version of SQL server is no small task.
You must first list your business requirments.
For example,
Does this db server need to be available 24x7
how many uses will connect?
How large will the db get?
Is your DB OLTP or OLAP?
Will data need to be replicated?
Will this install be on a cluster?
Once your know the version of SQL Server you will purchase you can then spec out the hardware.
These links can help with that.

You also might now know this but SQL Server database have backwards compatability. For example you can run SQL 2005 have a db that has compatability level of 8.0 (SQL 2000) There are some other considerations here that might pervent you from being able to do this.
