I am being inundated by a new and really obnoxious type of pop up message.

You may have them yourself. They pretend to be instant messaging and they purport to be from a variety of sources. Some of them are pushing stocks, and mutual funds, some say they are from Lisa who is pushing something else.

Does anyone know how I can disable these things? They come up even if I don’t have a browser open.
I am an occasional online gamer and having these things pop up; minimizing Asheron’s Call 2 is literally a matter of life and death.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you running WinXP or Win2K? These messages are likely from the Messenger Service.

To disable them , you must disable the Messenging Service. go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and scroll down the list to Messaging Service.

Thanks;

I have found out that they are not from the messaging service it is some new kind of ad scam. Actually I don't use any messenger service.

I received information on the Windows XP forum that allowed me to get rid of them.

In addition I downloaded Spybot and found the cookies that were controlling these things and got rid of them.

Thanks again for the help.

A friend of ours is having the same problem with pop ups, could you post the link to where you found the answer, please? We've been agonizing over this for months!

Thanks!

Here are the messages that I received on the XP forum.

To disable the ability for anyone in the world to send netbios messages to your computer, you can disable the Messenger service. Its easy to reverse if you wish to later.

Right click My Computer Icon
Select Manage
Select Services and Applications
Click Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

These are from some adware that installed itself on your PC. Run "Spybot" and get rid of all that crap. It is the worst kind of invasion.

Jon

I ran a search for Spybot and downloaded and installed it.

It works really well and I haven’t seen a pop up since.

Just want to make it clear I did both of the above.

Have you trifed any o the commercailly available pop-up preventers. One called StopZilla works well for me and it's not cost prohibitive.

pop-up stopper is free! "Jack of all trades. Master of none."
