When I go to send emails I get the error message

no, socket error 10060, error number 0x800CCCOE

I have tried reinstalling all the newtwork tools - I have removed and reinstalled Outlook Express and I have tried using Eudora and still get the same message any ideas?

The problem is probably with the SMTP server settings, maybe because your ISP has changed the server address. Check with them.

Can also be caused by number caller ID withheld if you are using a free ISP who checks who you are to authenticate.

I've chhecked and double checked all of the smtp settings and they are all correct - using freeserve. smtp.freeserve.net

I've even reinstalled all the settings.

Also I think it is odd that I can receive email form freeserve form their pop server but I cannot send any? Outlook just says "finding host" and then it comes up with the error message.

It's not so odd you can receive but not send, they are two different servers, using different protocols. What is a little odd is that it is normally the POP3 server that gives problems because of user authentication.

However, as a temporary fix, do you have any other ISP accounts? You can use their SMTP server to send from your freeserve email account.

Just in case there is a problem with caller ID, preceed the Freeserve phone number with 1470 - this will remove the CLID only for that call, and may allow you to send email. It may not make sense, but it is worth a try!

Thanks Paul - I've tried using another ISP - same error - I;ve tried using different email software - same error. I am going to try changing the modem lead and possibly change the modem - could be an error with the modem?

If it is an error with the modem, it is most likely with the drivers, upgrading them might help, using a different modem would use different drivers, so it would help clear up one possible problem.

However the error points to a problem with Dial up Networking, probably Winsock. If you have not removed Dial up Networking and then reinstalled it, the problem will remain, just reinstalling doesn't seem to make any difference. If you do decide to do this, make sure you have a record of all settings in your DUN entries, like access numbers, server settings, etc.

Incidently what operating system are you using, earlier versions of Windows 95 benefit from upgrading DUN.

What did you do to fix this?
I have a similar problem
