Can POS send data to the internet?

A friend of mine is thinking about creating an application for expense tracking, but it would require stores to post the POS receipts to an internet based server.

I am an API developer who knows next to nothing about POS systems. Are most POS systems connected to the internet and do they have the ability to send information to a rest endpoint?

No specific POS system. We would like to support as many as possible.

We are really hoping that each store can configure this themselves, but the more I look into it the more it seems like each store will require many hours of development to get their POS to send receipts.
