Greetings,
I have two offices connected via a T1 line. Not sure if its Frame Relay or ISDN. At each end I have a Cisco 1602 with a T1 card. The routing tables are correct and the IP configuration is correct (I verified this with Cisco tech support). I can ping any eth or serial port without any problems. I can also ping a Windows box at the other end. But, even though the Windows box is setup to share a folder, it doesn't show up in Network neighborhood. If I try to map to it using the full UNC path, it fails because it can't be found. I am pulling my hair out on this one. I've tried sharing a folder at each end but they never appear on the other end. However the respective PC's do show up locally in Network Neighborhood. I've also created an lmhosts file that appears to be working because I can ping using the host name. Any Ideas?

HHmmmm just a thought but have you tried to set up a static route to these locations . ip address, subnet, and destination . What routing protocol are you running ?

You'll need a WINS server at the central location or use LMHOSTS which are stored:

Win9x: c:\windows\lmhosts
NT/W2k: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts

You'll need a domain master at the remote location pointing at a WINS server if you want Browsing to work. Even a Win95 box can act as such (They need MS File and Print Sharing installed and under that Service is a Master Browser option which should be set to Enable).

Here is a sample of my lmhosts file (note, not .txt at the end of the filename):
207.92.43.4 r2 #PRE #DOM:artoo_net
#Internal use
192.168.45.12 leia #PRE
192.168.45.13 anakin #PRE

You can test to see if even NetBIOS packets are flowing with:
net view \\192.168.1.1
(instead of the NetBIOS name)

Once NetBIOS name resolution is working, you should also be able to do a Find Computer or net view \\netbios_name.

I have an LMHOSTS file on the Win9x boxes at both ends. There aren't any NT boxes either. Just the Win9x boxes. And I have enabled the Browse Master option as well as the LM Announce. Still not working. I spent an hour or so on the phone with Cisco and even they are at a loss. Although the tech said he know's nothing about Windows. I don't know why he doesn't hand me off to somebody who does. At this point I am on the verge of going to bridge mode and calling it good. Any reason that wouldn't work?

When you say you can ping the windows box, you mean by IP correct?

It is very odd that the LMHOSTS file is not working. Is it still a .sam extension. Remember that this is a sample file so it will not be loaded. You can edit it by going to

Start
Run
type in "edit c:\windows\" (without quotation marks)
find the lmhosts file
open and edit
when you save, save as lmhosts.fil

You can not edit with notepad or wordpad or whatever. That should do it. If you have done that, instead of going to bridge mode, find a bridge and I will accompany you in jumping off.

The lmhosts files are working. I can ping the box by IP address or netbios name. Just can't do anything else. At this point, I think we are having T1 trouble, judging from all of the input errors and CRC errors at both routers.
