Can Ping Internet Sites, but can't reach with Internet Explorer 1

This is complicated, but I had to rebuild my hard drive from another. I have Windows XP Pro running on an HP 8380. The C: drive has an older version of Norton Internet Security and Antivirus that has expired. The E: Harddrive is newer drive that is now a PAge File and cannot be booted from although it has my newer working NIT and Anitvirus. I planned on reinstalling them on the C:drive once I get it reloaded with my personal software. Anyway, I use Bellsouth DSL. I installed their modem and I could not connect to the Internet throuth I.E. or any other way, but I could Ping the modem and websites. After 3 hours on the phone with Bellsouth, we decided to hook the modem up to my Laptop (also Windows XP)and the I was able to get to the Internet. Bellsouth says I must have some kind of security software preventing me from geting to the internet. I can't find the problem. Before all this happened, I was able to access the Internet from my work place (NIC Card)when I had the PC there only a day before. Any suggestions?

For starters try the following:

Try going to Google via its IP address
nslookup google.com

Name: google.com
Address: 64.233.167.99
Name: google.com
Address: 64.233.187.99
Name: google.com
Address: 72.14.207.99

If you can get there via IP address then the issues resides with name resolution. If you still can't open up tools/Internet Options/Connections and make sure you're not using a proxy server of sorts. Try looking at control panel/administrative tools/services and minimizing any security settings you have. If that fails grab your Windows XP disk and do an sfc /scannow on your machine.

Thanks, I've tried all you suggested and still have the problem. I'll check Internet Explorer updates.

I think the "expired" Norton Security is the key. Uninstall that and try again. Make sure you are not using proxy and that your firewall is not blocking.

Having said that I hear this complaint often from my ISP customers. Eight times out of ten it is a virus that is intercepting DNS requests or port 80 packets. Get a current antivvirus and run a full system scan.
