I have a Windows 2000 server that can ping any IP address but it can not pull up a web page and it can not be controlled remotely by VNC with any internal PC.

The server is connected to a DSL Router. The small network is using NAT. The server IP address is 192.168.0.2 in the DNS network configuration I am using 192.168.0.2 as the primary DNS server and Bellsouth DNS address as the backup. In the DNS server configuration for the server I have deleted the “.” Already, and am using forwarders. Also when I run a test on the recursive query to other servers it fails. W

I just do not understand what could be the problem. If anyone need further info please let me know? Thanks in advance.

can u access the site by IP only?
if not then it may be something with the confirm that NAT is set correctly with port 80...
what is the domain name?

gtgren:

-are you sure that your ISP DNS is working fine?

-try resolving a website address with ping... then try to connect via IE to their site using the IP address... this will let you eliminate other options and isolate DNS as the cause...

The rest of the computers behind the NAT can access websites fine. But even though I put in the IP address in the URL address on the server that is having problems it does not pull up the web page. I can also ping the router 192.168.0.1 but I cannot access it from the server to configure it

I have other computers behind the NAT that are using the Bellsouth DNS servers and they are working fine.

I can ping anything and it will reply. But if I try to pull up a webpage by IP address or name it will not work. I cannot get into my local router by 192.168.0.1 from this PC, but I can from the others. I can ping this pc from the others with no problem.

Is there a service that I can restart, did a dll get damage?
I have never seen such

How is everything physically connected? Are all computers connected to the router or are you sharing the connection from the server? What kind of DSL router are you using? Where is DNS running, on the server, on the router, or on both? Is DHCP running? On the router, server, or is everything being statically assigned?

The server and all of the pcs are connected to the Dlink Router through ethernet connection. The server is running DNS but not DHCP. DHCP is running on the router but in not giving out an DHCP address to the server. The server has a static address of 192.168.0.2. DNS is running on the router and the server. I have change the server to look for DNS on itself and the router to no avail. Right now it is looking for it straight to bellsouth. It can ping bellsouth DNS with no problem. All of the other pc are not having any problems.

I ran a program called winsock fix and it did not work. I am thinking that something may be conrupt in the registry or either a *.dll is conrupt or missing.

I think this is a configuration error and not a corrupt file problem. I run a similar backup setup and more than likely it is the DNS setup or the server TCP/IP config that is flawed. Are you using 192.168.0.1 for a gateway on the server? Are you appending any DNS suffixes in your TCP/IP config. Does your domain name match your forward lookup zone?

If you compare a cmd--> ipconfig /all from your server against a working pc are there any differences?

I see this on contractors laptops at times. Make sure there is no proxy set-up in the IE configuration. You may just want to go through the set-up for the IE connection all over again and see if this resolves your problem.

The pathping worked on the PC it was able to make all the way to the DNS. It was very slow and not as fast as the rest of the PCs but it did make it. The is a wireless dlink router and as I said before all the other pcs are going through this router and they are working fine. This PC still is not able to open any webpages.

I figure this one out! Ipsecurity policy was set under network connection. This is located under the advanced tab under tcp/ip. Had to uncheck it and restart the computer.

well done :)

now, just make sure your dns server has a forward lookup zone setup and that your clients are registered with it...
and that dns forwards to your ISP dns
