Can Oracle 9i be installed over Windows XP HOME ? 1

all,
I'm taking an Oracle class & have purchased a computer to install the Oracle 91 to do class work and learn the system. The OS is Windows XP Home. Can Oracle 9i be installed with the XP HOME already installed ?

I have purchased Windows 2000 Professional UPGRADE.(never opened, still in box).
If the Oracle 9i should not or cannot be installed over Windows XP Home...can I install the 2K PROF UPGRADE over the XP HOME.....without alot of difficulty ?

Hi, Although not a 'supported' OS for Oracle 9 ( only XP Pro is) - there is no reason why it would not work if you have enough disk space and memory - read the requirements carefully and maybe add 10% to the minimums to make it usable.
(Since it is not supported, don't call Oracle support for help)
BTW, it is not installed OVER anything, it is just another set of apps and services that are installed like any other windows program ...

the PC is a Pent-4,512mb/533 bus/2.26GB freq.
80 GB Hdrive.
I'll be attempting this after class tonight.

Sam,

As stated above Oracle 9i should work with XP. Though I am running on XP professional version. Once installed you should bed able to use the application or windows services to stop and start Oracle.

However, if you have bought the h/w for training purposes and would like to widen your knowledge I would suggest installing Linux (say Red Hat 8) and installing Oracle9i on that. I have Oracle on both winXP and Linux for my work. It is not difficult to install and you will be able to work on real Oracle (process based) as opposed to the shared server version which Oracle runs under windows. Also Oracle is much more popular under Unix that under windows. If you have a chance take the challenge and you can always come back to this forum for help.

I've been told that LINUX taks up LOTS of space on PCs...would the 80Gb hardrive and the 512 MB been enough for both ORACLE 9I AND LINUX ?
Also that LINUX is hard to configure. I've never even installed anything on a computer before. All my work with
PCs has been at my job(using NETWORK based) windows software and we have UNIX HP. Since I'm not very 'technical' with configurations, would attempting to add LINUX onto the system be a good choice?

Sam,

The disk space and memory that you have will be fine for a nice test system on lInux. If you have the will there will always be a way forward. Installing Linux on PC is far simpler than many people think. It is almost all GUI based. You know HP Unix so you should be OK with Linux. All you need to get hold of is some freebe Red Hat 8 disks behind a book like &quot;Red hat Linux 8 Bible&quot; or better buy RH 8 professional from any PC shop. You will get 45 days installation tech support as well < $100. I assume that you have some broadband network access ase well. So you can download whatever you need when you need. If you work on UNIX at work, Linux will be a good fit. If you have a problem come back to this forum. I have a Linux box with 120GB (Sybase) + 80GB (Oracle) on it running ASE 12.5 and Oracle9i. It is really a mini scale work environment. Talk to your friends at work and think about it. It will be a good investment in your time. Go for it and good luck.

I do not have broadband yet(currentlly use isp dial up)...but high speed cable- should be available in my area by the end of July, I'm told by Cable company.

I will DEFINITELY pursue the LINUX option...thanks again.

Yes, Linux is really easy to install, just check that main hardware is supported (there can be problems with some NVidia cards) but generally the setup is just like windows!

You better use Windows 2000... Oracle 9i never works properly on 98 or XP... I got failed 1Z0-031 becuase of that

Sorry about you expereince, palmela1706, but Oracle 9i certainly does work on a properly configured WinXP Pro ( and on most XP Home systems)..
( I use the 9.2 Client on many XP Pro machines and have Database servers also running XP Pro ( I would not use Home in a production environment, obviously)..

I would suggest you better start off with
Windows XP first as your r still in the process
of learning.
Once you become with installation on XP
then move on to LINUX.

They say that XP home is not supported by it still
works.
