Can not turn on/off System Restore on XP Pro. – receiving message that system encountered an error and ask me to reboot, but the same story is repeated again after reboot.
Try to Re-enabling System Restore in Windows XP via the Group Policy Editor and if set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable, System Restore become grayed, if set to Enabled- System Restore disappears .
When try to set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Not Configured again and in Services to start System Restore – receiving the message that service can not be started.
Please help me how to sort this problem.
As I remember before was enough just to check option to enable or disable System Restore, but now I am unable to do this.

Have you checked in Services that System Restore is not disabled?

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Are there any third party programs that are interfering with System Restore?

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thanks for reply linney,
issue sorted by repair of System Restore Service

What exactly did you do to repair the Service, you leave us up in the air a bit? I'm glad you have fixed it anyway.

I was unable to start System Service receiving a message "Error 1058"
To resolve this issue done:

1. Start / Run / Services.msc / OK.

2. Double-click the Automatic Updates service in the right-hand pane.

3. Select the Log On tab.

4. In the You can enable or disable this service for the hardware profiles listed below area, select the current hardware profile.

5. Press Enable.

6. Press Apply.

7. Select the General tab.

8. Press the Start button.

9. Press OK.

I am still at a loss in following your fix. You say that by enabling the Automatic Updates Service that fixed up your System Restore Service? I don't doubt that it did but it is hard to understand as to why as the Automatic Updates Services has no Dependencies, and the System Restore Service in not dependent on Automatic Updates.

A bit of a mystery, but anyway a fix is a fix.

Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry ,I made mistake - point 2. Instead of "Automatic Update" should to be "System Restore Service"
Don't know why wrote "Automatic Update"- but errors happens.
