I have installed Solaris 8 on a Sun box and can not telnet to the root account from other unix systems.

I can telnet to user accounts without a problem.

I get the following result when attempting to telnet to root:

SunOS 5.8

login: root
Password:
Not on system console
Connection closed by foreign host.

I am using the correct password, but I am not sure what "Not on system console" means.

Thanks,

look in /etc/default/login for console

To add to juka's comment in /etc/default/login there is a lins "console = /dev/console"
If this line is commented then you can telnet to this system and login as root.
If it is not commented then root logins are only allowed at the console.

It is not reconmend you telnet a system with root account.
You may firstly telnet as common user then use command su to do what you want to do.It's for the sake of security that Sun disable this root-telnet function.
