Recently I had to re-install XP and all programs from scratch. Other than being a huge time wasting exercise everything went fine other than:
The system can not see the external hard drive.
When connecting the ext. HD to the PC the win “device connect” sound plays but win explorer does not see the HD.

The same external drive was previously working with this PC and still works with a XP laptop.

Belkin External Drive USB2 Enclosure Kit with a 3 ½ inch 160 MB drive.
Belkin supply a Win 98 driver but nothing for USB2 / XP

Thank you heaps for your help

chriski,

First step would be to get all that data to another drive or DVDs for safekeeping.

Is the drive visible in Disk Management? (right-click My Computer, Manage, disk Management).

Was it hooked up & turned on during the reinstall of Windows?

You could try the Autoplay Repair Wizard:

...but be sure to have a backup. Best of luck

Hi Wahnula,

Thank you for your trouble.
No the drive had not been visible in Disk Management.
After reading heaps of forums I found a simple solution, to use a different USB port, one that is mounted on the USB card and not on a hub. It only took about 6 hours or so to work it out !!!

Once again, I appreciate your trying to help.

Cheers,
Chriski
