I am a student trying to load Oracle Personal Edition for W95/98.

I go through the install and log into sql plus with scott as the user name and tiger as the password.

As it starts the database I get the error -
"can not open reistry
software\oracle\home0\sid_list
starting with default sid"

Then it prompts me for another password. I am a little frustrated because we use this same version at school and others in class have seemed to load it fine. I have uninstalled over 30 times and used different install settings.

Can someone please help me to get this to work.

I am running W98SE with all the windows updates
128 megs of ram
24G HD
Celeron 400 Processor

Thanks

Paul,

Can you create the registry entry it's expecting? [sig]<p>Mike<br><a href=mailto:michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com>michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com</a><br><a href= Cargill's Corporate Web Site</a><br>Making mistakes, so you don't have to. &lt;grin&gt;[/sig]

Just to eliminate bad assumptions - have you created a database and defined an instance yet? [sig][/sig]

I do not know what it is expecting in that key. Regardles of what I try to log in as I get the error. Oracle has about 5 different logins for the PE.

Carp,

I did not create any databases. I am under the impression that thedatabase that user scott and password tiger connects to is installed by default as to be used with their Intro to Oracle books. I did, however create a new database this morning but it took over 7 hours to complete. I was not at the PC when it completed. This seems odd.

How do you create an instance to the databse? I did find a script that will create the data used in their books. [sig][/sig]

The last time I installed PE, I believe it still had a checkbox somewhere in the installation sequence that allowed you to specify whether or not you wanted a database to be created in conjunction with the installation. If you did not select this option, one did not get created.

Regardless, if you have created a database, you had to create an instance. There should be an init.ora file as well as a listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files on your system now. The init.ora file will have a name similar to initORCL.ora. The string between &quot;init&quot; and &quot;.ora&quot; is the name of your instance as well as your SID.

I haven't verified this, but I suspect that in the course of creating the database, there should have been a software\oracle\home0\sid_list created in your registry.

Are you still getting the same error? [sig][/sig]

Carp,

No I am not getting any errors now. I can log in as scott for user and tiger for password and do a query against the emp table and actually get the results. I do remember that option about the creating the database, and I beleive I said no to the option.

It all seems to be working now and I can do my class labs now. Once I get more familiar with the environment and get caught up on my labs, I can work on the DBA side.

I am still a little confused on how the tables and data got created if I didn't create the database on installation. The database I created was demo I think. If I log into another account like sys for user and change_on_install, I can not access the table emp. This part is confusing for me but I think once I start working on the Admin side it will come together.

Thanks for your help. Be assured I will be a long time member here now. This forum has a good amount of activity and fairly quick replies.
