I was given a Dell laptop w/W2kPro. The previous owner and I cannot log on - tried probably 20 times but keep getting told to, "Check spelling of user name and password." Do not have a boot disk. Any ideas other than using it as a bookend? I'm not a big technophile so try to keep it simple. Thanks.

Load into safe mode and try administrator account. Might get lucky and it not have a password then you can go to control panel, administrative tools then computer management. From there you can reset account passwords.

I think you need the admin password but most likely no longer know what it is for whatever reason. You will have to be able to crack this password. Take a gander at the following link. There is alot of good information here about an issue such as this.
