can not install mysql

I have been trying for two weeks to install MYSQL.

I continue to get error messages.

After running the setup program I get the message that the conf can not be modified and that I will have to modify it manually. I have two manuals each of which give me differant instructions, none of which work. I have tried using the instructions provided in the instruction doc provided by MYSQL still can not get it to work. I am able to get the server up but I am not able to run anything in windows. I can use DOS but when I do I get a message that a file is missing. It does not tell me what file it may be nor from which directory it may be missing. I recently uninstalled and deleted the DOS files for about the tenth time and reinstalled, I now get a error message " Erroe occured during the move data process - 103"

and then I have the option of choosing OK or Cancel both of which discontinues the installation and returns me to my desk top. I have no idea what to do now. Can you please help me?

it does the mysql and php install and config and apache too
