Can not import from illustrator into 3dsmax

I tryed hard many ways but 3dsmax 3.1 refuses to import
my ilustrator files (. ai).
What shall i do ?
If anyone knows

the only thing i can say is make sure everything in the illustrator file is converted to a outline and that its saved as version 3 throu 8
