when I move or delete a file, windows 2000 pro will not let me delete the original or the folder it was in. It keeps saying access denied the folder is in use. I then close explorer and restart and then I can delete the file. It have checked permissions and attributes. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this so I dont have to keep restarting my explorer.exe

thanks in advance

Sounds like it's holding either a temp file open or windows is assuming you're in the folder therefore it's in use and will not let you delete it

do you know why it would think this or a way to stop it. I do file work quite frequently and this is becoming very annoying. I can totally get out of the folder, swtich to explorer then try to delete the folder.. it wont let me.

Is this just a home computer folder or a terminal service client or networked computer?

it is a networked computer, however the files/folders are local and not shared in any way.

well, what comes to mind is the HD is still writing some sort of cache after moving the file out of the folder, how long did you wait before trying to delete the folder before closing windows explorer and re-opening it.

I can not say why it happens, But I to have suffered this problem, Even after shutting down and restarting. Two things I have done are:
Rename the folder then dlete it (works only occasionally)
Wait.
For reasons unkown, try to delete it over several days. Without any apparent reason, it will one day become free and allow you to delete it.
I will be interested if anyone knows why it happens, as it can be very annoying.

I waited a time and tried right away, neither worked. I am at a loss after searching the web and finding no solutions at all. I would hate to reinstall my os. But I can not find a solution. It has something to do with explorer.EXE .. when I use a prog to view what process is using it, it is always explorer.EXE and when I stop it, it can be used like it should be. So for some reason explorer.EXE is not releasing that folder so to say so I can do what I want with it.

How are you viewing this folder? Icons? Details? Thumbnails?

I have had this problem when in thumbnail view, however, if I change to detail view I can delete the file with no problems.

I know that this is not an answer as to why, but maybe it will work for you too.

Hmm, so it only deletes when you close explorer and reopen it. is this all files?

Have you made any modifications or updates to IE, internet explorer is directly intergrated with IE. so it can affect it.

you could try a reinstall of IE 6
