snap Server 12000. Server# 601308. Snap OS software 4.0.854. Bios 3.2.667
Veritas Backup Exec v.9.1 build 4691

Daily backups of our Snap Server have run without failure until February 9th, 2005. Failure was due to "unable to attach to device"

Other remote (NT and Windows 2003) servers back up fine. From the backup server we can ping the Snap Server and when logged into the backup server using the Backup Exec service account can navigate to the Snap Server. When I try to create a new backup job (as opposed to running one previously created, which is giving the unable to attach error) when I try to navigate to the User defined selections and try to open up the share I get "An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of \\ip#omitted here\Z$. A device-specific error occurred."

Service accounts and permissions had not been changed. Settings on the Snap Server had not been changed. Settings in Veritas Backup Exec had not been changed. Only change was the installation of a number of Microsoft security patches that morning.

MS Security patches installed:
MS05-008 Windows Shell
MS05-010 License Logging
MS05-011 Server Message Block
MS05-012 OLE and Com vulnerability
MS05-013 DHTML editing component
MS05-014 IE cumulative
MS05-015 Hyperlink Object Library

Any idea which one may have caused the problem and what can be done about it?

TIA, Jackie

Try placing the remote agent and job engine in debug mode on the Media server and try to create a job and let it display the error. Take a look in the debug logs

Have seen this before when trying to backup the default shares on a SNAP server - in my case it was C$ I couldn't connect to.
I just created a new share called C - and have had no problems since.

Someone let us know that the problem was Microsoft Security Patch MS05-011, KB885250. Uninstalling the patch allows the backup to work again. If uninstalling the patch is not an option (as was our case) then a setting can be changed on the Snap Server itself:

On the SNAP admin pages, if you go into
Network Settings -> Microsoft Networking
Select "Advanced"
and then unselect "Enable NT SMBs"

Hi jbsiegel,

Does the fix you mentioned work on Windows 2000 pro and what is a Snap server?

Does anyone know where i can get the hotfix that address the issue caused by critical update 885250?

Regards

Jat

Jat,

A Snap Server is a network attached storage box. The ones we have run on a proprietary Snap operating system, so the fix I mentioned would only work on Snap Servers. As that fixed our problem I didn't pursue a hotfix to the patch.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Jackie
