My system has an Avaya Partner ACS R6.0 processor with Avaya Partner Messaging R7.0 Voicemail (6 port) and two other modules (206EC and 206E). I set up the system a number of months ago using the Partner R7.0 PC Administration Program via my computer. I have also used remote administration a few times early on before I started administering through the computer program.

In trying to make some changes to the system, I found that I cannot access in any way.
Here’s what I’ve tried and what happened:

Using the Partner R7.0 PC Administration Program via my computer, I cannot connect. I went back through the original set-up (RS232, 355a connection, hyper terminal, etc.) to make sure I could “talk” to the system that way and that I had the correct password. All seemed well when I put it through its paces that way, but I was still unable to connect through the LAN. (I even just connected the laptop computer direcly at the module to ensure that it was not a LAN/router/etc. issue.)

Next, I went ahead and tried to connect using the remote administration program. Couldn’t get any of the four (?) ways to work, I’m guessing due to modem hand-off problems, as I have at least been able to connect via direct dial to 76 this way once or twice in the past.

Finally, I tried to do at least a couple of things by going through Intercom 77. Even though I have checked the password for this on the phone, it still tells me my password here is wrong.

Please help. Why can’t I connect? What else should I try? Could someone at least tell me how to bypass the Intercom 77 password so I can do a few things that way?

THANKS!!!

for the remote you need the password from system program #730

Yup, check that you have a password in #730.
I had a computer where the CPU went bad. Seems something else on the MB died too. I couldn't connect to anything until we replaced the computer. I also had a device driver update (thanks windows) that impaired my modem (it almost worked). Had to roll back the driver.
Finally, I have had noisy cards in the system mess up the modem connection. Admin port connection should be unaffected. Listen to the intercom once you break dialtone for silence. If you get noise, fix it.

I do have a password in #730, but it does not work when I try to access through intercom 77 (I get "invalid password" message.)
Also, I have checked the system password through the RS-232 route and also cannot access through the PC admin software.
Thoughts?

I just switched to vonage. Because of the digital to analog converters being poor, I get that same error on the password when I connect to Magix systems. It always says wrong password, when it is the default.

If there is noise on the line you may have the same thing.

Hi Newnewkid,
Re-read your first post. To connect directly to the lan port with your laptop you need to use a cross-over cable, or go through a hub. First test, connect through a hub and try to ping the iP you set the voicemail to. Let us know. If you can't ping it, solve that problem first.

The remote admin modem needs to be ext 76 (77=typo?) In a hunt group, hunt group 6 (ie 776). Make sure no lines ring or are assigned to ext 76. One thing you can try is have a 2500 set in parallel with your modem. Dial the system up and when answered by the attendant, enter *8 <pause> 76. You need to create a transfer only mailbox for ext 76 to access it through the voicemail. If you try directly on the system, select intercom first and have the program dial 76, then hang up. This ensures you aren't on an external line.

Thanks -- My theory was to avoid going through the hub to ensure that the network wasn't the problem. How do I ping the IP?

To clarify: I have tried to access the system two ways.

One way is via a phone at Extension 10 or 11. I dial Intercom 777, 0#, and then the password. Keep getting "invalid password message" even thought I set the password using #730 and checked to confirm it. Used to be able to connect this way, but can't get in now.

The second way is via the PC administration software from a laptop. Used to be able to access it this way and now I can't. Hve checked the passowrd via the RS-232 connnection, but then can't connect via the LAN.

Okay, from a DOS (COMMAND) window enter the following: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where the x's are the iP address you set up for the voicemali unit. I like to set them up low with the other servers. Assuming your gateway is 192.168.0.1 your voicemail may be 192.168.0.5 or something like that. If it's not in the same subnet, it will not route. Make sure it's out of your DHCP range - like your server(s).

#730 sets the remote password for your phone system, not the voicemail. Thats PC Administration.

Your voicemail is accessed via RS-232 using hyperterminal or something like that. The password is the same as you set for mailbox "0". If someone changed the password on mailbox "0", you will need Avaya to connect and reset it $$$. Please check with all personel that may have done this. Check your notes. Call Avaya during a normal business day to avoid the after hours rates if you need their help.
