Can IPO resolve NTP DNS?

Or any DNS at all?

I always have to ping a domain to get the IP for NTP or SMTP, and this is kind of stupid since there is a tab to input the DNS servers in.

Try to have a look into SysMon with filter services\DNS enabled. Should look somewhat like this:

Code:
315641mS DNS: Local Query mail.mnet-online.de to 192.168.0.16
315645mS DNS: Local Response mail.mnet-online.de result=8180:questions=1,answer RRs=1,authority RRs=0,additional RRs=0
315645mS DNS: RR: QType=0001 QClass=0001 ttl=6950 name=mail.mnet-online.de target= ipaddr=62.245.150.229

It could have been the provider, but it does the same in the office as at the customer, different providers. Also, the routers in front of them query the NTP just fine. Cisco, Linksys, Mikrotik, DrayTek, doesn't matter.

IMO, it's not rocket science. Set DNS, IP route and voilà!

Did you get DNS to work? I'm not sure what you tried to tell me in your last post.

SysMon shows DNS resolution well. Requested fqdn, used DNS-Server and IP address for your requested fqdn as you can see. If it doesn't work I'm pretty sure you will get error messages that DNS is not responding or other errors.

Yankblan, You continually fail to provide any useful information, or perform these tests suggested to help you identify the cause.
if you just want to rant then I suggest you rant to Avaya.
this thread is a total waste of everyone's time & I have red-flaged it.

@IPGuru,

I'm not providing more "detail" as of now because I'm not currently in a position to test it out (with Monitor); the config is basic and I'm hopeful that someone could come and chime in on something they might have seen somewhere.

My previous post stated two facts: different providers/same result, and that the routers in front of the system both use NTP/SMTP successfully.

No need to start a flaming war about it. I'm not some newbie that doesn't know what FQDN, DNS, MAC, tip/ring, and all that good stuff mean. I know how to troubleshoot 101 fine; I just don't get how it could be so simple, yet NONE of the IPOs we (not just me) have installed work the way it is supposed to. I WILL do the monitor thing when I get the chance, just looking for someone to *maybe* think outside of the box and come up with something that maybe could explain it.

Also, based on my experience with different brands, IP Office gives me the weirdest, most out of whack problems I've ever seen. Probably/maybe there is a simple explanation, but as of now, I don't see it.

Sorry for the tone, but some of the responses made me feel like I call my home provider and they ask me "Have you reset your router?"

Just post a config of a system that it doesn't work on (change any sensitive info) with relevant data listed like IP's gateways etc, no need for live stats if you don't have them.

It's your continued insinuation that it's the system at fault that is getting peoples backs up (you don't say it in as many words), but we literally all do it all the time and we would certainly agree if it had DNS issues, but the fact is I have never ever seen it fail in any system I have installed, configured or even taken over from another BP. It really works just fine :)

Ruoters gettings time fine does not mean that they do not block NTP for other devices so perhaps the routers are blocking the NTP request.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

If you think it is a DNS problem and that IPO seems to be not able to reach your configured DNS (because it is blocked by provider or the local firewall) you should look atone of the running computers what DNS they use and just use the same one.

[banghead] That's it I quit.

In my office it works; used to get "no answer from time server" (loose translation; if anyone knows how to set SSA in english, please let me know), now I don't! Did same thing for 4 years on this system, first time I see it working. Guess I'll never know what could have changed in the meantime.

Onward to SMTP now...

Try this in the lab:
Connect LAN2 2 to the local LAN and let it use DHCP, enable NAT.
Set LAN 1 as a DHCP server.
Create a default route to the local gateway on LAN 2 in IPO.
Connect your PC to LAN 1 and set it to DHCP client.
Check if you can ping the time server.
Check if you can update the PC time using the method explained earlier.
If you can then IP Office software is to blaim, if you cannot then it is the DHCP or DNS server on the local LAN which has a problem.

Well, since you ask...Install in English mode? [smile]

..or..
Go to your where you keep your install suite, typically ..\\Downloads\ADMIN9_X_X.
Extract "SSA.cab".
Then go to ..\\Downloads\ADMIN9_X_X\SSA
Run index.html
(default English)

Kind regards

Gunnar

I do, but since my OS is in French, it defaults to it; have to create a shorcut with "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avaya\IP Office\Manager\Manager.exe" -locale:en-US to make it work.

As for SSA, thanks very much! It forced me to upgrade JAVA, and all I got were security blocks and a boatload of errors!! [tongue]

Would have been cool, but no biggie. Thanks for the help.

French OS? How wonderful!

Java is best upgraded offline as admin.

Kind regards

They certainly don't do themselves any favours when it comes to breaking the stereotype :)

Do they translate the brand and model name on cars too? Ha ha!

Kind regards

We call them the Gestapo.

I have customers who had to P-Touch the keys on the microwave oven in the break room.

It is that bad. Government employees creating job titles for themselves; we have a break now, but when the separatist party wins the elections...[hairpull]

Glad to see you have now seen it working.

SysMonitor is probably a better tool for this type of diagnostics than System Status.

As to what has changed, either the touting on you IPO has changed enabling it to connect or your router was indeed blocking ntp & that has now been cleared.

There is are good reasons why we give you the basic "Have you turnd it of & on again" type question that you get form tour ISP.

1) This issue does look like a minor error in the settings (i have seen otherwise competent engines specify a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on IP routes intended as default gateways & not realise it)
2) by going through these basic settings it enable us to be sure of the set-up we are working with, this is still my first approach when a field engineer calls for Tech support (& I don't want to admit to how many times going back to basics & starting from scratch has resolved a problem of mine)
