I currently have to convert any excel (.xls) files to comma seperated files (.csv) before I can use them as a source in informatica.
If I do not do this, and I try to import a source from file, and choose an excel file, informatica cannot read the data in the excel sheet correctly.
I have been looking into adding a odbc using a microsoft excel driver, but I have been unsuccessful in doing so. Can anybody tell me if it is possible to use an excel spreadsheet as a source. Thanks

you can define an excel-file as a data-source without a problem, using an odbc-connection (microsoft excel driver). In the specified xls-file you have to create a "named range" in which the data is stored. Than you can import the table in source analyser and have fun ;-)

I remember reading a note on that in the informatica knowledge base, but can't remember the hint-number...

Once you define the ODBC for microsoft excel import the excel sheet. To import excel sheet open the source analyser and click on Import from the database. Than select the ODBC source name and enter userid and password. You will get list of tables in left pane. select and press Ok.
Once u create ODBC the excel sheet will be treated as a table thats why import it from database is selected in option.

I successfull created the excel odbc and imported the file as source in designer but how do I set it up the session in the workflow manager? Do i need to create a new relational connection?

Do i need to create a new relational connection?
Fur sure! That's the only way you can access a source in a session. And you'll need an ODBC data source on the server.
