I just got my DSL modem and have a Netgear FS105 fast ethernet swicth, can I set up a 2 computer network for internet sharing using the switch instead of buying a router? If so how.
Using ethernet modem isp -- modem -- NIC1|PC1|NIC2 -- switch -- PC2 Using USB modem isp -- modem -- USBport|PC1|NIC -- switch -- PC2
you should see a connection for your ADSL (under win XP go to 'my network places' and click 'view network connections'.
Right click your adsl connection icon, select the advanced tab, and tick the box marked 'share this connection'.
<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]
manarth's post is absolutely correct. Note that you need on one machine to have two network adapters. Some good step-by-step advice for setting up ICS under Windows is Steve Winograd's site:
After reviewing this, you might seriously rethink the switch notion. A broadband router of reasonable quality is often available for under US$30 with a little internet searching, or perhaps at the computer store where you bought the switch. Tell them you need to exchange it for a router.
Thanks for the help. I might just searh for a router and see what I can find, $30 is pretty reasonable. I have had the switch for like 2 years not sure if they would exchange it or not, could be worth a try. I may have a second NIC card lying around some where. Will have to check into things further.
