I'm trying to learn ASP.net and realized i need IIS on my computer, so I'm guessing I need XP Professional. Can I upgrade to XP Pro from XP Media Center on my notebook computer? IS this only way to get IIS?

Thanks!

It seems that there are hacks to get IIS installed on Home edition, but it is simply recommended to upgrade to Professional - yes, Home --> Pro is a supported upgrade path.

Uh, right, I may have given you some bad information, glad I checked. The documentation on this is sketchy. Media Center Edition is not explicitly listed as upgradable to XP Pro from what I can see...so, I would wait for another response from someone who may have actually done this...shutting up now.

Well, technically, MC is Pro. Technically.... I say this because if you install MC on a computer, you can join it to a domain and it will perform similar to Pro. However, this needs to be done during the install! If you dont you cant join a domain and you loose alot of functions. Since you want to upgrade, try reinstalling your MC from scratch and see if this gives you what your looking for.

thanks...only thing is i bought direct from dell w/no discs...so don't have original...any other ideas?

They usually give you a black and white disk of the os. And usually, it doesn't require activation :) I would contact dell, they do waranty their systems for 3 yrs. The os disk is mandatory. You paid for it. However, what ever the story, no disk, no luck....

Are you sure you can't just install IIS on Media Center?

To install IIS, add optional components, or remove optional components

Click Start, click Control Panel, and click Add or Remove Programs.
Click Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components Wizard appears.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install, remove, or add components to IIS.
