Hi,
I have two instances of SQL 2000 running on our Win2003 server.

1st instance is the CV database.
2nd instance is for other inhouse application.

I've been reading that during the upgrade process from 6.1 to 7, "The dedicate instance of SQL database engine will be upgraded to SQL 2005"
Does this mean that the 2nd instance will remain SQL 2000 ?

As this is the only server where we could have our own SQL 2000 installed I had to set it up as two instances on this Server. Now that CV is being upgraded I wish to leave the second instance as is "SQL 2000" and only upgrade the 1st intance to SQL 2005.

Is this possible ?
thanks.

so if i understand correctly, you've configured a second instance under the sql server 2000 installation that comes with commvault?

If so, that's not supported in any way i think...
It should be a dedicated install.

Not sure if it can work and would survive a upgrade though :)

Upgrade will uninstall SQL2000 + reinstall SQL2005 + Service pack - if you are only using 1 copy of SQL2000 then you will probably lose your 2nd db instance because the upgrade actually performs a DR of the CV db after reinstall

SQL that is installed with the CommServe is supposed to be dedicated to CV ;-)

We had existing licenses for SQL server which hosted our databases on an old box. After our restructure this server was the only place where I could setup our databases.

As Commvault was installed on this server when I went to install SQL 2000 as a seperate entity the only option I had during installation was to setup a new instance of SQL. So I did that, which meant that our databases could live on this second instance independent of 'commvault' databases.

Doesn't the Commvault upgrade process do an in-place upgrade and only target its own default instance of SQL 2000 ?

Also,
If I look at the properties of the two intances of SQL, I can see that:

The Commvault database is running on SQL Enterprise Edition.
Our databases are running on SQL Standard Edition.

Which leads me to believe they are quite distinct SQL installation.

tbh...I wouldn't like to commit to an answer without testing it first

I'd ask CV the question before your upgrade

yup its a tricky one. I'll get in touch with CV and see what they say.

The CV tech says, the SQL 2005 install during the upgrade process is an in-place SQL upgrade and it does target its own default CV instance. But won't guarantee anything and only alternative he can offer is a manual install of SQL 2005 and then the CV upgrade to version 7.

sounds a reasonable solution

Thanks
