I currently have an NT4 200 user network with a PDC and 2 BDC's, I want to upgrade my PDC to 2000 Server but I don't want to use AD just yet. We statically assign IP addressess, I have tried to upgrade in a test environment, but I couldn't get all my accounts and file permissions until I installed Active Directory, can anyone help? :-(

Well unfortunatly I do not think you have a choice with AD. I belive a 2000 Server cannot be a DC untill you install and activate AD. That may be why you are having so many issues. You can install Win2K server without using AD, but it will be just a member server. James Collins

Thanks for replying, Doesn't active directory need DHCP to be able to work?

No, it'll work with static IPs. You have to have DNS though. James Collins

Yes, Butch is right. You must install AD to operate as a DC otherwise your win2000 server will be just a member server. And Butch is right again, AD will work in both DHCP or static IP.
