I am currently living at college and would like to be able to see other computer on the network at college. As is right now I have the wire going from my wall port to the internet port on my router. All my computer get their 192.168 address and can see eachother fine with in my little network. I want to make it so I get my IP from the schools DHCP and see everyone on the schools network.

First turn off DHCP on the Linksys router... then use a crossover cable to connect from your wall port to one of the LAN ports of your Linksys... connect the rest of the computers to the other LAN ports. Do not plug anything into the Internet port. Now everything is on the school's network and should get their settings from there! Hope this helps.

Ok, it did work... BUT, for someone linksys routers like to disconnected other people on the network around me. The network admin finally turned off my network port and alerted me of the problem. He said linksys routers are just like that... Is there anything I can do to fix my router so it doesn't disturbe the network? I turned off DCHP and thats the only thing I can think of.

What are the range of IP addresses that your school network is giving out? Are they the same as the 192.168.1.x that the Linksys uses? The router may be having an IP address conflict with another device on the network.

I just did exactly what you want to do. Except I used a wireless Linksys router. I used the UPLINK port (instead of a cross over cable). I disabled DHCP and I also statically configured the IP configuration for the WAN side to an internal IP address like 192.168.11.9 or some such. It does not matter WHAT the address is since the WAN side is not connected to any network. So far there have been no problems. I'll keep my fingers crossed now that I heard your story... You might try disable all the normal protocols like pptp, remote configuration and the like.

hi,

here's what you need to do to make the Linksys Router into a hub.

1.Disable DHCP
2.Set to Router Mode (by default it's Gateway)

ok so I tried all the above with my WinXP Pro desktop and Win98 laptop.....the XP Pro machine will not connect to the ca mpus network (10.x.x.x number) and only gets a 169.x.x.x number. (win98 machince I didnt reboot to see if it'd work. So I reset the linksys (BEFSR41) using the laptop to run DHCP as a Gateway and the WinXP machine still wont get a good address (192.168.x.x).

Suggestions?
