On our "Live" Instance we have removed the SA rights of the database team and enforced a policy of testing in a seperate environment before release into LIVE.

This is now causing an issue that they need to be able to see and monitor the "LIVE" log files, and i see no reason for this to be a problem, but they can not see these since the SA permissions have been revoked.

How can i expose these log files to these people through SQL Enterprise manager, but keep the restrictions to stop them changing LIVE systems ??

Any suggestions appreciated

firstly how are you connecting to the other machines.

How we have set it up in our company is through RAS over a phone line to all our estate, we use win nt authentication.

To do this you need to set a user up on the host machine the same as the machine you are logging in from. Once this is done you can simply register the machine on enterprise manager using winnt authentication. Thus problem solved.

This is just for the SQL Error logs, to monitor issues.
They should not need to have any direct access to the transaction logs.

Thanks

Do the team members have access to the folder containing the logs? The logs can be viewd in a text editor. However, I find that sometimes a live log cannot be opened by an editor.

You can also give them permission to execute the undocumented stored procedure sp_readerrorlog. This SP will return the contents of the error log to a query window.

Check the following for sp_readerrorlog parameter info.
