I have a couple of old 98 workstations that I would like to use in a public access area. These connect just fine to my 2000 server but I have a security concern.

Here is my question - Can I set it up so that the 98 machine can only run the program I want it to and be sure that no one can access my 2000 server for any other reason via Windows Explorer, searching etc?

I basicly want to force a loop on the 98 with the permitted program.

Thanks!

Hey,

Its not really an answer, but its the truth! Win95/98 sucks when it comes to networking - and certianly security and integrating with the network. I know there's AD patches for Win98 which you can download and that AD integrates with the non-NT clients well, but I haven't tried it out. If it works then maybe Group Policies will work to lock down what users can do. Otherwise you have two options;

1. poledit.exe
2. Get a real network O/S for the clients. Win2k/XP Pro will be fine - or even NT4 wks. Steve Hewitt

This will work what you said Steve

"If it works then maybe Group Policies will work to lock down what users can do"

you will need to install the AD client on the win98 machines.

OF course this is assuming u have active directory domain MCSE NT4 MCSA 2000/XP CCNA CCDA

Windows 98/NT machines will not process Win2K policies with or without the AD client. The 98 machines need the config.pol and NT needs the NTConfig.pol to lock it down. Both are created using Poledit. Hewissa
