If I change my text alignment setting my text shifts. This is very obnoxious as all I want to do is change the alignment and not move the text.

hi!

yes, there are basically two ways to add text to illustrator.

1. just click anywhere with the text tool and start typing , or

2. drag a designated area on your artboard with the text tool and start typing, all text is kept with this bounding box and can be aligned to suit.

of, course text can also be applied to paths and around shape with the text to path tool.

best of luck!

Yes, but when I change the alignment of an already existing text box, the box shifts.

hi!

...mmm...bit odd...

...unless your mistaking it for a loosely typed out text, even when you select these items with a selection tool it can be mistaken for being in a predefined bounding box when in really isn't...

...try copying this problem text, create a new bounding area with the text tool and paste it into this newly created text area, then play about with the alignment opions...

best of luck!

It's loosely typed out text for a title and not text typed into a predefined text box that I drug out.

...i take it you are using the paragraph palette and not the alignment palatte, these have different functions...
