Can I move an existing Exchange Server machine to another server with a different name??
My server is a PDC running Exchange 5.5 and I need to move the exchange server to new hardware.
I just did this. Moved a Exchange 5.5 on NT to Exchange 5.5 (enterprise) on Windows 2000. Add the new server to the existing Exchange Site. Move mailboxes to the new server. Move the public folders over. Stop services on old server. Remove Exchange from server. Make sure clients are pointing at new server. During move, if someone's mailbox is pointing at the old server but their mailbox is on the new server it will change their setting to the new server - cool.
This is a very common subject here. there are many good posts to do a search on, I personally just moved our Exchange 5.5 server to new hardware recently, and all the tips in this thread helped:
thread10-466339 are a number of ways to move your Exchange Information to a new server, and what I did differed just a bit from everyone elses. I will detail what I did, and you can decide for yourself what you wish to do (read as many postings as you can, and get familiar with the processes) :
1) Install Win2000 Server, and Install Exchange 5.5/2000 on your new hardware, and have it join your existing Exchange Server.
1) Back up the Critical Data Folders on your current machine
DSADATA, mdbdata, MTADATA.
2) After Hours (I dont like doing this during business, just in case) move the Public folders to your new Exchange Server, get them all, dont miss any (you can do this under the advanced tab). Make sure you have replication going on both machines. Then use the Move Mailboxes under tools to move all your mailboxes (hidden ones too).
3) Leave Both servers up for a day or two, so that all your clients will be re-routed to their mailboxes through MAPI. (You may notice a delay in delivery of emails, but most users wont though)
4) When you finally are ready to take down the old server, check the public folders one last time, to make sure no one added any that went to the old server (all new ones should be mapped to the new server), then shut it down, then, when it is off, check your public folders to make sure they are all accessible through outlook.
5) Install the Internet Mail Connector on your new machine. You may need to Add a DNS suffix to your computer name if it doesnt allready have it, Exchange didnt want to install the IMC without it on my machine.
6) Verify Interoffice connectivity, and Internect Connectivity.
7) If you had an email Virus Scanner (Antigen, etc...) Install that onto the new server.
That should be all you need to move your exchange server. Make sure you reroute all your POP3, and SMTP ports to the new server. I hope I didnt forget anything. Should you have a problem and the new exchange server crashes, use your backup to restore your pub folders and Mailboxes on the old machine. The only problem with that, is if its been a day or two, you loose all the emails that came in. Just make sure that your users moved them to their local .pst's during that time, and you should be ok.
I used these steps to move our server, and it is working great! You may run into an additional issue, just do some looking around, someone probably dealt with it before you. Hope this helps.
