I would like to connect to computers togethor directly (without the use of a hub, switch, or the like.) I realize this requires a crossover cable but I was wondering if there is a way around that with software or something. thanks in advance.

no, no way around it. Must have crossover cable.

Make your own. Normal is 1-8 to 1-8. Crossover is 1 to 3, 2 to 6, 3 to 1 , and 6 to 2.
Or use 2 mating rj45 to d9 or d25 adapters and accomplish the same thing using straight thru patch cords.
I've done them both ways. Crimp your own is kind of a pain but it can be done.
And the ethernet gods will be unhappy with me, but I've also used satin to accomplish a connection when I was desperate.
And the other option, use thinnet between the computers if you have dual media NICs. Ed Fair

those Macintoshes that contain gigabit copper ports also have the ability to fake crossover connections (auto Polarity) the new gigabit Nortel switches do too, I suspect someone gigabit chipset has that built in I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

all gigabit devices will auto configure its part of the spec, you can have the pins in whatever order you choose and can be diffrent on each end and it will still work. But its best to wire the cables in TIA or TIB standards.

LOL!! He just wants to network two PC's with a crossover cable! I think that a Gigabit switch might be a bit of overkill for two nodes!!

hehehe .....
