I have lost an account and it is not visible in the control panel. The data is still there but as yet it is inaccessable.

I have found the solution but it only applies to XP Pro and I only have XP Home.

HELP!!!!

Does the Pro solution involve running lusrmgr.msc? (local users and groups - you can enable/disable accounts here). Can you not run this on Home?

No I cant do this procedure on Home because it just says that XP Pro is needed.

Is the problem actually getting access to the profile data? (ie, do you need user to log on with this profile?). If so, you could just create a new account & copy the existing profile from disabled account to new one.

Other suggestion - does the net user command work in XP Home? Its got a switch to activate/deactive. See

I could'nt do that.
O.K. the thing is:-
The account is'nt accessable at the logon screen. In the Documents and settings folder the account Folder is there but I cannot access it, and when I go on properties it tells me that there is nothing in the folder.

Curiouser and curiouser - because its Home you presumably haven't got all the file security options (eg, ability to take ownership of a folder?) of Pro - which should mean no folders are inaccessible to an admin user. Is it possible this user folder has actually been removed - and there's just some 'odd' entry stuck in windows - which makes the folder appear to be present, but not accessible (I've seen this happen before - but its not much use to you if true, as data is gone. Could only suggest some sort of data recovery tool, if the area the folder occupied hasn't been overwritten. There's a copy of Drive Rescue (freeware, now discontinued and replaced by shareware app) here
PS. How did the user account become 'lost' in the first place?

I Don't know how it went missing, it just did'nt appear on the logon sceen then I checked the control panel and it was'nt there.
Cheers for the help.
I appreiciate it.

I HATE XP!!!

That program has'nt worked, I keep getting the error message:-

"Access violation at address 004BD159 in module 'filerecovery.exe'. Read of address 00000030"

Do you know what that means??

What is the name of the account that you're refferring to? Don't mess with it if it's "All Users", "Administrator", or "Guest".

If the account isn't one of the above, you can access it. There probably isn't anything the folder, but you can check by rebooting into safe mode (F8 at startup), then logon as administrator. I expect that you'll be able to delete the folder also if you find it empty.
