Seems like an odd request, but a provider recently asked me if I could busy out line 12 coming out of an integrated T1.

Could I do this by connecting Tip and Ring together or would this create havoc on the IADD?

Thanks!

That's the easiest way.

Although, the carrier should be able to busy out the line just as easy.

they asked you to do it. worst case, just issues with that 1 port. only way they would ask you to do this anyway would be if this is the lec's iad anyway but a short on tip and ring is proper basic troubleshooting.

The answer is yes you can.

If you are obsessive and are worried the IAD is poorly designed jumper it with a 600 Ohm resistor instead!

If you ask a better question you will get a better reply. Be specific so we can help!

Just hook up any old standard phone and take the receiver off-hook!

If you use the resistor method, make sure resistor is rated at 5 watts or better. Otherwise resistor may get hot.

Let us jump back to the original question. Are you saying that you need to busyout the 12th channel on a T1 circuit? If this is the case, then NO!, you can not just jumper across it to busy it out. You would do this through the programming of the PBX.

If you put a jumper across the T1 circuit you will take the whole circuit down (all 23 or 24 channels).

The IADD is a channel bank, that provides Loop Start dial tones and Internet Access from the T1. So, yes, you can just short them together. It that ends up letting out the magic smoke, the provider told you to do it, and they are providing the IAD anyway.

If its a Cisco series IAD, the loop start lines are current limited out of the box....shorting the TR will not effect anything....been there, done it

We do that routinely, since the wait for a knowledgeable support rep at Verizon and AT&T is endless. Circuitry in premises equipment designed for connection to the public network has to have enough internal protection for a simple short-circuit, but not necessarily enough protection for shorts on the station side (re: IP Office). Try plugging in a "foreign" device to a digital station on IP Office and the world ends.

I would fax them a work order, have them sign the approval to begin work, and fax it back. That way I have documentation for billing them for my time. I do not work for them, and how much connecting will they do for you without charging for it? NONE!

I can wait for them to roll someone out to troubleshoot their own stuff, especially since they always blame the PBX even when you prove it is not the PBX.

OK, so maybe I talk tough, but I may do it for them anyway.

I beleive if the individual lines are ground start, shorting tip and ring together will only work the first time.
