I just installed server 2003 yesterday and had some small issues. I previously had server 2k installed and was able to create a user with no password. Then people could connect to the server form other computers running XP without typing a password. Every time the computer was rebooted and they needed to connect to a network drive, XP would just pop up a box with the login pre filled and asking for a password. There was no password so they just had to hit enter.

I tried doing the same thing in server 2k3 and cannot connect from another computer. It seems 2k3 does not allow "no password" users. Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks.

Well, this will tell you how to change the password policy;

But I am confused as to why you need to do this, are you in a workgroup configuration or are you using active directory?? Obviously not having passwords is a security no no

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Thanks for your quick response. I have a small network at work. We have a server (the one I just installed 2k3 on). The server is on all the time and has 900GB of storage. The employees come in and scan stuff and when it is finished it gets moved out to a shared drive on the server. We also host an FTP server off 1 partition. So the server is just a file server. The employees share computers and we have no need for any security on the password level because it would not help.

I am also a newb but believe we are in a workgroup configuration and that I am not using active directory.

Sorry, I cannot find an edit button to edit my last post, but it looks like the link you sent me is only for active directory password correct? If I don't use it this will not help me correct?

You just need to edit the local policy then; admin tools - local security policy

GPEDIT.msc is the console that you want. Run it from the 2k3 server and go to Computer config->Windows Setting->Security Settings->Account Policies->Password Policy.
Set the Minimum Password length to 0 and this should solve your problem.

Thanks Pagy. In the local security policy, what exactly do I want to change?

Got it all figured out. Thanks for everyone's help.
