Hi all
I know there are some very bright guys out there...
I have inherited a website that is totally suffixed with .aspx, something I know nothing about, and which I am informed has been discontinued.
From a brief and not thorough test I appear to be able to rename them to .htm and then edit in Front Page.
Now, I have a folder of 67 documents, all .aspx, and filled with hyperlinks to .aspx addresses.
Is there any way I can set up an automated macro, or something, to trawl through the whole folder and replace aspx with htm in all filenames and their internal references?

That's my problem, is there a solution please?

ASPX pages will most likely include programming that the server must process prior to sending it to the browser as HTML. So renaming the ASPX files to HTML will disable the function of the web pages. Without fully understanding the contents of the ASPX files, I do not recommend proceeding as you intend.

If you're okay with breaking all those ASPX pages, you can rename references of "ASPX" to "HTML" within the files with a tool like this.
You can use a renaming utility to replace the extensions on the filenames.
FrontPage has been discontinued by Microsoft. ASPX has not been discontinued. I sense you're setting yourself up for a big mess. [bigsmile]

I agree with spamjim.

They have aspx for a reason. Somewhere inside the code is aspx code that needs to be run for the page to work correctly.

Simply removing it all is very likely going to break the web site functionality.

I would understand exactly why they are in aspx format before attempting to change them. What exactly is the ASPX doing.

Beyond that, as mentioned ASP is alive and well.

Thanks to both.

I had a feeling that there should be more to it than I knew, and you have confirmed it.

A bit more on FrontPage...

FrontPage's last update was a decade ago and the last full release was in 2003. Microsoft replaced FrontPage with Expression Web, which was also also discontinued a couple years ago.

Expression Web is now free and would make a good replacement for an aging FrontPage.

hi Guthro

The situation is "resolved" inas much as I have walked away...
Thank you for the input, I was unaware of any group like that.
In fact I do have access to the originals, but the conversion I was looking for was in the other direction.

When I said "community is free", it's a version of the software that is free called Community edition. Might be of use in the future. It's an excellent piece of software.
Sometimes walking away from such projects is best or starting from scratch.
Good luck.
