Can I add a PC running Windows 2000 Pro to a 2 PC local Network?

I stretched it a bit by identifying myself as a "Technical User" ... but in the small town I live in, I'm considered a guru. I'm usually able to help my neighbors with their PC problems, but this is the first time I've encountered 2000 Professional. A neighbor, in a small surveying business just acquired a new system that came with 2000 Pro and asked me to help them add it to their local network of two other PCs. I connected the ethernet cable ran what I could of the wizard, but can only get a small amount of the network to work. PC1 and PC2 were (and still are) already networked. They work fine with each other. The new PC (PC3) can only see (and be seen by) PC1. It can access files and peripherals on PC1. It can not see PC2, or be seen by PC2. Also, PC1 can see PC3, but when it tries to access files on PC3, a password is solicited. I set no password when I ran the wizard, I tried to grant full access to all users, but nothing seems to change. The troubleshooter was of no help what-so-ever. I saw one thing that disturbed me a little when looking through help ... and that was that "with 2000 Pro I can network to other PCs running 2000 Pro." Does that mean I can not network to the PCs which are on Windows 98 and 95?

Any assistance will be appreciated.

On your win 98/95 machines you'll need to log on using client for microsoft networks with a username and password matching an existing account(s) on the win2k machine. Then, assuming that the 2k machine is using the NTFS file system, you'll need to grant those users permissions to the shares.

As fas as seeing each in network neighborhood; this is a browser issue and can best be resolved by using the NetBEUI protocol on each machine and enabling netbios over tcp/ip.

Okay ... so I've made some progress ... thanks to some good advice ... now I'm down to one last (I hope) problem. All PCs can "see" each other. The new PC (running 2000 pro) can access each of the other PCs ... the other PCs can access each other but when either of the original PCs on the network try to access the new PC they require a password. None was ever set up ... at least not intentionally. Nothing I can find in the users or administrative areas of the 2000 PC lets me set or reset network users passwords. Everything I can find anywhere seems to refer to other "users" on the same PC ... not network users. Any suggestions?

All users must be the same on all machines.
Example: Joe Doe 1234 on w98 PC, Joe Doe 1234 on W2000 PC

Add two users to the 1win 2000 machine, these will be the user accounts for the users of the win 9x machines. You also may want to use TCP/IP (a must if a router is connected such as for internet access). then edit the host and lmhost files. Their is a explaination inside these files how to do that.

Still a little confused ... the users (machine names) are as follows Sarah (on the W-95 PC), Trudy (on the w-98 PC), and Lucy (on the recently added W-2000 PC). Each uses only their own PC and they only network to share some files and printers. Do I understand from the earlier posts that I must add Sarah and Trudy as Users on Lucy's W-2000 PC even though they'll not be directly using it? This wouldn't be a problem, I'm just trying to make sure I understand before I go in and try it on Tuesday. Also I have it setup to use TCP/IP since that was the way the original network of Sarah's and Trudy's PCs was setup.

Thx again for any help

While running the windows 2000 and win 98 together, you must have shadows of each user on each computer. IE, Sarah (on the W-95 PC), Trudy (on the w-98 PC) must have an account on the windows 2000 PC. TO do this, make sure that you have the same User Names AND passwords. After doing this, you should add Lucy to the windows 98 system. That should set it all straight for you, if you need any clairification then feel free to talk to me about it again
