One of our users has deleted a file today that he/she didn't mean to delete. The file was on a Windows 2000 Server, not the C: drive of a PC. It was a file that they created and saved on a network volume. I have searched Microsoft's knowledgebase, but I haven't found out whether or not there's some method for recovering deleted files.

Since it was created and deleted today, it won't be on any backups (we do the backups every night).

I come from the Novell side, where you could use the "Filer" command and choose to salvage a deleted file. I don't know what Microsoft's equivalent to "Filer" or "Salvage" is.

There is no equivalent in the MS realm. You must purchase a third-party application to have this capability. I also migrated from the Novell world and was very disappointed that MS didn't have this function.

Sorry novellmel,
Once deleted, it's gone. Third party software such as SystemWorks 2003 is the way to go to prevent this from happening again next time. Works fine for me at home running Win2K pro.

Thanks, agrappe and ghubiak. In regards to this feature, Microsoft needs to catch up with Novell!

I heard that there is a possibility that Microsoft has added this feature to Windows 2003 networking. That would be nice.

yes, they have, and I agree, it's about time. They call it "Volume Shadow Copy Service".
