yes, for older switchs only, like the CSI/SI/R will have a serial port.
Newer switches, such as all S-Series (S8300/S8400/S8500/S8700) do not have serial ports, and must be done via IP over a LAN (unless you want to buy a 'terminal server')
I believe hyperterminal has a telnet client built in, so if you have a LAN connection on the PC, you could user hyperterminal via a LAN/IP connection (not a serial connection)
You can use dialup networking on with XP / vista to setup a PPP connection to the server's analog modem, then use ssh / telnet from the PC to login to linux or CM and do administration. A good emulation for the linux servers is free online.
For Legacy Avaya switches, you would need Terranova, Procomm, or some other terminal emulation package that allows you to access the modem on your PC and setup function keys for the terminal type you want to use when you login to the switch.
You can also use PPP and dialup from linux / solaris servers
Mitch I have an s8400 system and can not log into it either direct on the server or remote using SA software.
I can though log into my VM system without issue (separate server) when I try to connect from SA with GEDI I get a communications error: No Ports available, I can ping IP address without issue so I know at least the NIC is responding. I'm a little reluctant to just boot the system for fear I have a bad processor although with the exception of logging into the system and Softphone users not being able to connect – all functionality seems to be working fine.
Thanks - I've reviewed your link references and see it is pointing to an upgrade which results in the Flash drive failing. Now would that not result in the system failing 100%? We are operational – we just can not connect to the system, Also we did not modify our system in any way prior to this condition.
No, the upgrade on that one just made them realize it was broken.
s83xx, s85xx, s84xx servers all have a feature called ramdisk. If the hard disk (flash drive) is read only, or cannot be read, the system will run on ramdisk and CM will run fine and the users would not even notice.
Can you login to the MPC, using a remote PPP login? Then try ssh login@my-host over the ppp connection?
A great teacher, does not provide answers, but methods to teach others "How and where to find the answers"
