I have set up the VPN to the point where it looks like I get a successful connection. However, I must only be getting that connection to the router? I do not see an active session from the server and I cannot see the LAN from the client. I can ping addresses on the LAN. I know I must have a setting or three wrong somewhere, but as I am shooting in the dark trying to do this(and on a deadline), I have no idea where. I am using a Netopia R9100 router, a Win2k Server and I have tried on clients with both win2k pro and 98, getting the same result. I have read that I need to have port 1723 enabled on the router, but when I enabled it, I wasn't able to even get the false connection. I then got stopped with an error that said the password/username validation had failed. Has anyone had a similiar problem and could point me in the right direction to start looking for where I've gone wrong?

I have gone through this article, and set everything up as instructed. Still no luck. I really am beginning to believe my problem lies with the server rather than the router. Should I have the RRAS set up the same whether I'm using dial-up or VPN? I can't seem to come across anything that differentiates. Or am I on the wrong track all together?

I am having the same problem right now, with a little diffrent setup. I have a new 2k server running as the vpn host and I am trying to connect a 2k pro workstation at a remote location. The 2k workstation is on its own LAN and I think there is a conflict there. It could be the router that is running that network too, because I have zero problems if I vpn in from my home computer (that is not on a lan) on a dial-up connection.

Did you set up the LMHOSTS file on both ends? You should be able to search for the LMHOSTS.SAM... The actual file should be located where you find the sample on each workstation (different for locations XP and 98) and should not have the extension...

Then in "map network drive" use your URL - example: \\server12\c\
