Very strange...are you sure you're tapping the ESC key (or the F1) while the notebook is booting up? You should check your owner's manual, if you still have it, 'cause this site, amongst many others, lists those two as your possible key combinations:
could also be a combination of control>alt>delete or control>shift>delete
if you are completly stuck, try ringing the company of your computer. they should be able to tell you straight away. i know its frustration though that something simple takes so much time
Steps
Power up computer from off condition with ESC key depressed. Unit will display "Check system. Then press (F1) key"
Release the ESC key, press the F1 key. This will put the unit into the BIOS setup screen.
Using the arrow or tab keys move to the password field, highlight NOT REGISTERED.
Press the SPACEBAR, enter the password at the "Password = " prompt, press ENTER
The computer will prompt for the password again (verification), enter password, press enter. At this time the password field will change to REGISTERED. Subsequent boots will require the password.
Press END to save and "Y" to exit.
