Hi everybody,

I'm just starting to study for the CCNA 640-801 exam and have the CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammie for the previous 640-507 exam. This book is a few years old and I know they've changed the exams so I was wondering if there are any good books that can help me prepare for the current 640-801?

Along with the book, can anyone recommend a basic hardware setup for the sims?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I would definitely recommend Cisco Press books. Check out:

just realeased CCNA Certification Library (CCNA Self-Study, exam #640-801)
By Wendell Odom

They are more expensive but worth the price.

Totaly agree with pmesjar, I'm almost done on my
CCNA study and we use the Cisco CCNA companion guide's (set of 2).
I can strongly recommed them, even for a beginner they are
exellent.
They are BTW written by the same guys that
write the questions you will finaly get at the exam, and
every question is covered in the book (that's what they say).
As fare as the hardware goes, if you have 3 small routers(1600 or 2500-series)with cabels!, and 1 or 2 switches, a 1912 or a 2950, you basically have all you need. :)

Thanks so much for the recommendations Peter and geirendre!

I know the time for test preparation varies for everyone but approximately how long it did it take you guys to feel comfortable with the material and ready for the exam? How many hours a day or week were you able to put into preparation?

Thanks again for all your help!

Thats totaly up to you EV1772, I haven't logged my hour's
but an average of 10 to 20 pr week is my guess on the hours I'v used.
Started from schratch in January, that is No prior experience with switches, routers or networks.
Me an old telephone-man ;-) got my eyes on IP-telephony...
Took the first exam (640-821 INTRO)in March, plan is to take the other (640-811 ICND) in June.
Advice: Do you'r reading! over and over again, chapter by chapter.
and... get hands on with the routers and switches, you need to get it in your fingers.
BTW has alot of useful reading on their pages, so get surfing, you can "Google" up much interresting about CCNA on the web :)

Hi, EV. I am also preparing for the 801. I recently purchased a 2 router, 1 switch setup from a store on E-Bay. All arrived and work good. Here's the link if you're interested: As you can see from the link, the name of the store is ALLNET AMERICA. If the link won't work do a store search. I paid $600 for my setup, then went to Blackbox.com and bought a 19" desktop rack to support them. That was around $40. Also, I have purchased the Wendell Odom CCNA Self-study for the 801. He's a very good teacher (writer). I bought this 2 volume set from Amazon.com. Amazon always has the best buy on books---cheaper than Cisco Press.

Good luck. Let me know how you do on the test.

Dennis

Just an FYI, if you look around on ebay for a little bit longer, you should be able to pick up a couple routers and 1 switch for around $300-400 total (including shipping). Just make sure the routers have 16/16 memory configuration and IOS 12.3 or better.

Regarding the books, check out bookpool.com. I'm starting my CCNP self study here, and the CCNP study guide set is only $95 for all 4 books, and these cover the new exams Cisco just released.

Hope this helps!
