Can anyone help with "Dial In" problems on NT Servers.
Actually dialing in to a Server and logging on is not a problem. The
problem comes when I try to map drives. Some PCs are fine, others seem
to have a mind of their own (especially laptops). I have configured many pc's
to dial into servers, all can ping the server but not all can see the
server when I do a search by either name or IP address. I even have one PC that
can not see the server it is dialed into but can see the PDC and map to it.
I am using a mix of Win95, Win98 and Workstation OS. Can anyone explain
why this is and suggest a solution?

A couple of things to check are:

On the RAS server do you have "Access entire network" checked, or just that machine.

Most of all--do you have the lastest dial-up networking upgrade from Microsoft? There's an upgrade for 95 and 98 (separate files). They make a big difference. For 95 it's a file called msdun13.exe. For 98 I'm not sure--there's a 40-bit encryption update called dun40.exe. Both available on Microsoft's site. You actually get a TCP/IP upgrade on the 95 update with the dialup upgrade.

Also check the protocols being used on the servers and clients--check the dun profile on the client and experiment with "PPP" and "NT3.51" dial-up settings. Try adding netbeui on both client and server.

Check your security, as well.

Another thing is make sure you have IP forwarding truned on on the RAS Server.

Are you using Wins?, DHCP?, or DNS?
The Geek

Dont be afraid to share what you know. There are no losers in our arena, only self rightous monkeys atop thier own tree.

I agree with Mrgeek... I believe that your Wins and or DNS is not resolving the name and IP address efficently.
