Can Any one tell me about the basics of cognos..... 2

I want to learn about cognos & everything related to it. I happen to be a software engineer, & want to broaden my horizon related to Business Intelligence. So IF any one can help me out with it....

Our company just recently started the ball rolling with Cognos Powerplay, Impromptu, & Transformer. We currently use it to analyze Sales and Marketing data. However, hearing the comments from end users, other depts are now becoming curious... surely a positive sign. We have reduced our manual runtime by many, many hours using Powerplay... not to mention the increased security & accuracy now that users no longer must query our system or manually alter spreadsheets. For some things, we still must import into Excel... but it is limited.

We have a PRMS, and have no trouble running the Cognos products that we have.

From what I saw at the Forum this year, I am strongly urging my company to jump to the 8 series. Reportnet and Office Connection are awesome. I tried a hands on demo with Office Connection in Excel and was really impressed with the ease of use. Also, after talking with many other users at the forum, the training for end users in their companies on Reportnet ranged from only 20 minutes to an hour.

Hey ,
I'm also new to this tool.I can tell whatever i know.
This is basically a reporting tool.
And within this cognos there are diff. tools like
IMPROMPTU--In this we'll develope catalog which is metadata means it stores the table structure and joins b/w them(the tables we bring into catalog for reporting from database) and when the report is run it goes to the database through this catolog.

POWERPLAY
-------
in some situations people do not need to go to database every time they run the report(for eg they are running the reports based on
last month data )so they create ca 'cube' with last month data and every time the run powerplay reports it goes to the cube
and gets data instead of going to database .

REPORTNET
----------
and when it comes to report net there are diff parts
FRAMEWORK MANAGER-To develope model it's matadata like catalog.
REPORTSTUDIO--to develope report.
QUERYSTUDIO-to develope adhoc reports.
Content Store-it's database which stores report related preferences and security etc
Dtabase--actual database.
if the user wants to run the report they donot have to have any
S/W on their system they just need web browser and it's just a single point entry.

http://www.cognos.com)

for information, specs, etc... They have downloadable demos out there and some free webinars & seminars giving you a glimpse at the software and capabilities.
