I have a need to select for further action only those records meeting my filter criteria AND having email addresses. The filter works fine, but I cannot get the email selection into the process, even using AP's. Is this even possible? And, if not, why is such a basic functionality not readily available in a CRM of this maturity and market stature?

Run the SQL Query and save the results as a Group which you can then use to perform the further actions.
The SQL Query builder will let you build this query easily.

Now, this is amusing! After posting my question yesterday, I figured out exactly what you suggest. Now I'm trying to integrate the entire process in an AP, but as we know they are completely lacking in SQL functionality, so I've begun a study of GoldMine macros. You can take a SQL Query and paste it into the SQL Portion of a filter if you're using a GoldMine w/ a SQL Backend... The SQL is available from the properties tab of a filter.
Also, you might be able to avoid this by using a trigger of a Detail in your AP (Email) then a trigger filter.
