We have a used Cisco 1720 router. No one knows the password. I am trying to recover the password, but I can’t. I press Break on the terminal (windows XP, 2000) keyboard within 60 seconds while turn on the router, but the router still loads the image and asks for the password. I have tried Ctrl+Break, Shift+Break, Shift+F5. I also tried 3 computers. Any suggestions.

What term emulator r u using?
Ctrl-Break should work for Hyperterm but it may be different for other apps.

You can set the baud rate to 1200 on the emulator and the as the router boots hold down the spacebar for 15 seconds and then shut down the connection reset to 9600. Re-connect and you should be at rommon. This is the method to simulate the break sequence.

1. I use Hyperterm in windows 2000 and XP. I did try Ctrl-Break.

2. I also followed Cisco document to set the baud rate to 1200 on the emulator and the as the router boots hold down the spacebar for 15 seconds and then shut down the connection reset to 9600. If I set baud rate to 1200, it generate symbols. Then I shut down the connection and reset to 9600, press break. It still loads the image.

Yup never use hyperterm it is just a pain in the tailend. Tera Term rules for ease of use. Good telnet client also.
