I have a few extra CALs. Office domain is running on 2003, 2000 and 08.

If I were to set up a a practice server, install a copy of server 2003 and set it as a new domain, will it screw up the existing network?

I want it to be totally separate, just sharing the current internet connection for MCSE practice exercises.

It wont hurt anything to run multiple domains on the same subnet. But if you want to have total seperation put your playground behind a router, even a cheap Linksys would do the the trick.

Can I install it on another computer, say at home for practice with it still validating? Says I have 5 CALs, but we only have one 2003 server while the rest are 2000.

If I understand what you are thinking of doing, it would violate the license agreement. It will work just fine, but it’s not legal. You should buy a single user TechNet subscription. This will give you access to most MS software to download and use in a nonproduction environment. It’s only around $300 a year. I recommend it if you want to play with and test MS software.

NP, thanks. I thought the 5 Cals meant I could install it on five machines as it's only used on one.

Without seeing the actual license agreement. I am pretty sure you have a 1 server and 5 user access license.

I would agree. 1 server - 5 users.

You might try downloading the trial versions @
You can use the trials over and over again.

Hyper-V and Virtual Server work great for MCITP (formerly MCSE) training.
