We have a Nortel BMC 400 phone system. I’m not an expert with this system and I am not sure how to perform certain configurations. So I thought I would see if you all could help. This is what we are trying to do.

We have remote sales people with voicemail boxes setup in our system. When a person calls our main number and then hits an extension of one of these users, it goes directly to their voicemail box. This part is working fine.

We also want the ability to type that extension number from internal phone in our HQ, that it too would go to that voicemail Box. However, the screen displays Invalid Number.

So I tried to Update a DN to be that extension number and configure it to forward to voicemail, and when I dial the extension now, I get not in service. I suspect that is because I don’t have a phone setup.

Is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

Thanks.

The internal user can dial feature 980 then enter the mail number.

Thank you for your asnwer. That did work. What if we were to modify our goal to something like this:

When a person calls our main number and dials an extension, instead of going to their internal voicemail box here in our office, the call gets transfered to their home office. Of course we would only want to do this for the people who work remotely.

Is this possible?

Thanks again.

It is possible, but not a smooth workaround.
You may want to consider using outbound transfer on their mailboxes.
Outbound transfer allows a caller that reaches the mailbox to press 7 and get transferred to a programmed destination, like the mailbox owners cell or home phone.

Another option is IP Softphones, especially easy if your telecommuters log into your network using VPN.
