In each of our divisional offices, I have a stand alone Networker Server (version 7.0, Win2K), with a single AIT-3 drive. The backups work great - except when the local IT contact forgets to put a tape in the drive, obviously. The savegroups then run all night and into the day until I stop the groups manually, or someone puts a "writeable volume" into the drive. I try to avoid the latter so that performance is not affected during the day. What I would like to happen is for the groups to fail after waiting say 1 hour for a writeable volume. Legato tech support says there is no such way, except maybe via scripting - which I know very little if anything about. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is the group started automatically ?

If so you could script a "Group stop" everyday at 6 o'clock for example and launch it via a crontab (or task scheduler for windows).

To do this you'll have to run the "nsradmin -i inputfile" command.

You should create a file as input of this command, this file will tell all commands to run and must contain something like :

====================================

. type:NSR group;name:GROUPNAME
update stop now:true
y

=====================================

Replace GROUPNAME by the real group name.

Hope this helps.

Why would you have Networker Server on each machine, One NW server and storage nodes make more sense and would be cheaper too.

I don't agree that it would make more sense. If I were to do it that way, I would have one server controlling literally hundreds of clients. If a server goes down, I'd rather have only 1 of my divisions affected as opposed to the entire country. While I'm totally onboard with a cetralized system, it's just not that feasible for my particular situation at this time.
