When users call external numbers ,another number is showing up on the recipients caller ID rather than that of the person who is calling.

The user is calling from 1800 number but caller ID not showing 1800 number.

kind of weird...what do i check to isolate issue.

Is your trunk group carrying the call an ISDN type? If not, the number being transmitted is controlled by the PSTN provider, and you can't change it from the PBX.

If it is ISDN, enter the change public-unknown-numbering x (where x is your extension length). If your system is older, the command would be change isdn public-unknown-numbering.

See if there's an entry that is over-riding the expected phone number.

Carpe dialem! (Seize the line!)

Dufas is 100% correct, also a list trace station, see what trunk group that station captures then look at the isdn pub for confirmation.

Surprise! Most loopback jacks are located conveniently behind the ear and above the leg
