I have AT&T Broadband as my internet provider. I have 3 computers Id like to hook up to my connection. I know I can get a router to share the connection. But Id also like to get a cable modem to reduce my monthly internet bill. Is there such a thing (yet) that is a cable modem as well as a broadband router or do I HAVE to buy them seperately? And if there is something like that available, any recommendations?

I could not find any and bought seperate ones. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I havn't been able to find any either...linksys sells a cheap cable/dsl router with switch (i think it goes for $100 at walmart), and most cable providers will give the modem for free when you sign up for a plan...if all else fails, go DSL...Verizon is everywhere and they do give the modem for free...

Or if you have a linux box you can use as a NAT (Network Address Translation) box. So in your case you will have the following network config
______
| A |___
|______| |
______ | _____
| B |___|__| D |______INTERNET
|______| | |_____|
______ |
| C |___|
|______|

I used to have the same proble like you. I also use AT&T as my broadband provider. What I have done it assign one IP address on box D as your internet gateway(this will be your IP addres you will get from AT&T. For the others assign them with you local IP_Address and their gateway will be computer D. I know that Windows 98 and above comes with NAT protocol ( the name is different and I do not remember from top of my head)
Good luck

You may want to take a look at WinProxy as it has the ability to filter all packets for viruses while providing NAT and shared Internet access.
Wingate is another Internet connection sharing software. Okay for home use but not businesses in my opinion.

The there is a price to pay in resources on the host PC. Consider using an old W95 Pentium 133+ with 32mb of RAM as gateway (host for the software) that is not used for anything else. "Whether you believe you can or you believe you cannot, either way you are right." Henry Ford

I use the Linksys EtherFast Cable DSL 4-Port Router which allows DSL and Ethernet connections at the same time. Great reasonable product. Route once; switch many
